Studio Update December 26, 2025 and an Update!

Winding down 2025 here at the beach!  It's been quite a year for us.  Many, many, ups and downs and challenges.  Looking forward to starting the new year with new work and new opportunities and some time with family!

I finished my 50th white line woodcut this week.  It's the full drawing from which I took my mini-gem being shown at SAGA in NYC.  I made this print slightly larger than the 4 x 4 required size of the SAGA show.  I don't often work this small and I enjoyed being able to finish a print in weeks rather than months!

"Winter Solstice"

I am starting new projects and hope to have more to post soon.  I will be starting another Mokuhanga workshop through the Winslow Art Center studying with Charlie Spitzack.

I'm participating in the Art in the AM program in Lewes on January 14th at 10 am.  Reservations for this event are required, it fills up.  Art in the AM

The Lewes Artists are having a group show at Peninsula Gallery in February.  More to come.  Peninsula Gallery

I have been accepted in the International Juried Exhibition "Visual Voice" at Cape Cod Museum of art this January. The Print is "Christmas At Longwood II". The jurist is David Henry Perry former owner of Bertha Walker gallery in Provincetown.  This is a significant honor.  CCMA

I am participating in the Art in the AM program at the Lewes Library in January. The event is January 14 at 10 AM.  I will be presenting a drawing at that event.

As the year is winding down and plans for next year are being put into place, here are a few things I have been working on in the studio.

Several new drawings are in progress.  No photos yet.

Studio Update Sept 21, 2025

Wow what a day we had yesterday at the Lewes Artists Studio Tour!  I had 200 visitors that filled out the raffle tickets, and probably some who didn't.  We're estimating closer to 300 since there were some couples who only filled out one ticket with one name!!  I drew three names for the raffle and those folks have been notified!

Thanks to all the new and returning guests for coming to my studio.  We didn't get to talk to everyone unfortunately, it was steady all day!  I hope I didn't miss too many of you!  I greatly appreciate the kind words from so many people.

We'll be here today breaking things down so if you won the raffle prize or want to look at work, we're here.

Hope everyone had as much fun as we did!

Studio Update July 20, 2025

I spent three weeks in the Pacific Northwest and came home with some beautiful photographs to inspire new work.  I'm working on prints and drawings this month.

I attended the ACPS summer exhibit in Lansdale, PA at the Eclipse Center for creative community.  My print "The Bell House" received an Honorable Mention.  Very pleased to be given this award.

Here are the Jurists comments:

"The image is well composed. Color, shape, and texture work really well. This is a fine example of white line woodcut."

Studio Update June 10, 2025

I've been working on new drawings and a bunch of prints.  The White Line woodcuts and drawings aren't ready to show yet.  I'm also making multi block prints, and Mokuhanga prints.  Here's a little of what I'm working on this week.  More later.

The Key block for the new multi block print.

All the blocks carved and ready to print.  This was a print I did with oil based (water cleanable) ink.

And this is the Mokuhanga print I did after the oils were cleaned off and I did some more carving on the block.

Studio Update: May 18, 2025 --UPDATED: 5/23/2025

It's been a busy spring.  I took a trip out to Seattle in April to do some continuing education in Printmaking at the Pratt Fine Arts Center with Charlie Spitzack.  Charlie is a relief printer and Moku Hanga expert.  The printmaking studio at Pratt is an enviable space for printing and learning.  I met lovely people while there.  In addition, Charlie is teaching an online class through the Winslow art center, a continuation of the relief and multiple block printing workshop I took last November.  I'm excited to be learning this technique.  It is difficult to do larger editions of white line woodcuts due to the nature of the process.  This technique will allow me to produce more prints.  These prints were done with water cleanable oil based inks.

Carving my key block

Printing my key block and transferring the image to a second block

All three blocks carved, and the key block which I will print as a black and white print.

Update:  I had a good proofing session today!

The proof prints left to right

Inking the blocks

A color print

A black and white print from the key block and background block

Blocks drying and ready to go again

I'll do an edition of this print now that I have it all laid out!

UPDATE

I did try a Moku Hanga print of this.  It's only the third time I have done this so in spite of the (MANY) mistakes I feel pretty good about them.  Still learning!  Experimented a bit with different colors in this.

Studio Update March 10, 2025

 New drawings and print news.

I completed this charcoal drawing of a scene on the Olympic Peninsula.  This was a cliff near the Kalaloch beach where one of my other charcoal drawings was inspired.  The storms and erosion here are fierce, so much so that several cabins at Kalaloch are having to be demolished because they were too close to the cliff face.

In print news, I am participating in the American Color Print Society spring member show at Abington Art Center in Jenkintown, PA.  The opening reception is March 15, from 2 - 4 PM.  More information can be found here:  https://www.americancolorprintsociety.org/abington2025. My print "Remembering Charleston" will be on view at the exhibit.

Studio Update- February 20, 2025

I have started many new pieces and completed a couple of things last week.  The first is a drawing of the interior of a Medieval building at the Met Cloisters in NYC.  This museum has a wonderful history and I hope to be able to visit again someday.

The second picture is a White Line Woodcut of hollyhocks from my garden.  During the pandemic shutdown I planted massive amounts of flowers and vegetables all around my yard.  Tourists out walking or riding bicycles would stop and admire them, from a distance.  It was a nice way to be able to safely chat with people while the world was coping with covid.

Studio Update January 25th, 2025

I just saw this quote and loved it.  I feel EXACTLY the same way!

"Yes, there are various problems; social, ecological, but I don’t paint that. it would add to the voice of despair. Instead I choose to contribute to the joy.” Imero Gobbato

How's that for a view!  Best aerial shot of Mt. Rainier I have ever taken!

I thought since it's winter I would post something winterish.

I'm finishing up work on several things this week and haven't had a moment to get photographs.  Very soon.  In the meantime I received news that I have been juried in to the American Color Print Society.  I'm posting a link to their website but I'm so new that I'm not on the member pages yet.

American Color Print Society

Very much looking forward to participating in their spring show at Abington Art Center in Jenkintown PA in March.  The opening reception is March 15th from 2-4 PM.

It's a particular Honor to be accepted in this Society because of the history of the organization and the link to the white line woodcut printing I do.  Here is some history:

https://www.americancolorprintsociety.org/acps-history

It was a society started by women because they couldn't get their work shown, and color printing wasn't accepted, black and white printing was the norm.

Studio Update-January 3, 2025/January 17, 2025

 Happy New Year!

Working on several projects these days in the Studio.  I like the quiet and lack of distractions in the wintertime to focus on my work.  I'm working a series of three prints of flowers from my garden.  The first floral is still on the block, not yet completed.

I also have a landscape in colored pencil that is about halfway finished.  It's slow going with the drawing, as it is with realism.  I probably have a month in this drawing already.  It's Lake 22 in the Cascades in Washington State.  This is a magical place with a glacier to the left of the scene in my drawing.  I have a way to go until it's completed.

UPDATE:  I've made good progress on this drawing and will be posting another photo this weekend!  It's not finished yet but getting there!

Here is the progress photo!  The water is the hardest part, there are so many layers!  Hope to finish this in another week!

This is an idea I'm playing with and is experimental.  I might not finish it.  White line woodcut with Chine Colle.  I used a luster pigment mixed with color.  Japanese paper at the bottom.

Another snow day experiment.  "Winter Bird" white line woodcut with Chine Colle.  Kikura paper.
